On December 5th, Gan Chenlu, a junior from SFLS, managed to win a second prize in the 21st Chinadaily “21st Century Coca-Cola Cup” National English Speaking Competition Zhejiang Final held in Zhejiang University City College.
Organized by 21st Century English Education Media and co-sponsored by Chinadaily and Coca Cola Co.Ltd China, the competition brought together outstandingly articulated young people from all over the province including 39 contestants from 30 colleges and universities.
The contest consists of a three-minute prepared speech entitled Two Cheers for ‘Made in China’, a two-minute impromptu speech and a two-minute Q&A with two questions from the judges.
Brilliantly performed, Gan stood out in the three sessions of the contest and received appreciation from both judges and audience.

To further deepen the teaching reform and improve the teaching quality of undergraduate education,full play is given to the role of teaching supervision.On January 6 SFLS held a meeting to review what has been done regarding the teaching supervision work of 2015. SFLS Party Secretary Lu Yi, Deputy Dean Wang Dan, all supervisors and young teachers receiving supervision and heads of the teaching and research sections attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dean Wang Dan.
First, Wang gave a brief summary and expressed sincere gratitude by saying that the supervisors have done a committed and excellent job during the past year to enhance the teaching quality of the young teachers. Then the supervisors had a heart-to-heart exchange of opinions with the young teachers being supervised. While recognizing their advantages, the supervisors also put forward the existing problems, such as monotonous forms of classroom activities, the existence of cramming education, insufficient width and depth of the teaching content, etc. Meanwhile, some teachers made brief summaries about their new courses this semester, shearing their experiences in the teaching process, expressing the puzzles encountered, and putting forward a lot of valuable advice.
After that, Lu pointed out that in the future teaching, supervision work should focus on mediating the relationship between "supervision" and "guidance", giving young teachers more guidance to seek for the continuous improvement of the foreign language teaching quality. At the same time, she expected that the teachers to ponder more over the new curriculum, spare no effort to reform classroom teaching with relevant action research.

Recently, student volunteers of SFLS were awarded the title of the excellent pioneering team for their summer social practice in Fuding, Fujian Province, according to the document jointly issued in 2014 by the Publicity Department of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committees, Civilization Office of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial Education Department and Zhejiang Provincial Students’ Federation.
During the summer of 2014, SFLS actively organized students to carry out a variety of summer social practice activities with prominent themes, rich content and distinctive features. A volunteer group consisting of students from SFLS and School of Information & Engineering went to Bailin, a rural town in Fuding, Fujian Province, and launched a series of practice activities, including voluntary teaching, English summer camp, care of children left-behind, care of loss-of-only-child family, cultural search, company investigation and environmental protection, which left a good impression on the whole community. At the same time, all students of Year 2013 were organized to participate in summer social practice in which senior students were encouraged to participate.Four students joined in a special practice organized by the university Youth League Committee and five students in a short-term exchange program abroad organized by the university. With enthusiasm and a pragmatic style, all the teachers and students attending the 2014 summer social practice successfully and completed the task and were widely recognized by the community.
The School of foreign language studies attaches great importance to college students’ summer holiday social practice. Early before the team set off, the dean of the school, Ms. Lu Yi, secretary of the Party committee, attended a meeting of security for the summer holiday social practice, putting forward specific requirements and extending her best wishes for them. Ms. Lu Yi, together with Ms. Wang Dan, the deputy dean of the school of foreign language studies, participated in the setting-off ceremony and paid a visit to those students in the summer social practice when the team was still in Bailin.
Featured in projecting, branding and basing, the summer social practice team of the school of foreign language studies has won a series of titles, such as “the provincial summer social practice base”, “municipal outstanding organizing team”, and “municipal most outstanding team ”. A group of teachers and students were awarded for their personal efforts and papers in this aspect as well.
