On Sep. 15th, 2015, our school ushered in 68 freshmen of English and Japanese majors . On their first day of arrival, a team of teachers and students from our college had been dispatched to the reception place to help the new students with their registrations. Dean. Lu Yi and Deputy Dean Wang Dan came to the scene to make sure everything went well.
On the following day, leaders of SFLS together with teachers-in-charge paid a visit to the freshmen’s dormitory and expressed their congratulations and warm welcome, follwed by a welcome meeting the next day.
Prof. Lu Yi, Secretary of SFLS CPC Committee, addressed her welcome speech to all the freshmen on behalf of the faculty members. After introducing the mottos of both our university and SLFS, she went further to the guiding principles of our university and the vision of our school on how to train talents. She encouraged the students to have a good balance between these pairs of relations in their university carreer: growing to be a person vs. growing to be a talent, expertise vs.common knowledge, freedom vs. restraints, communication vs. retreat. She pointed out that a university student is expected, first and foremost, to grow up into a whole person with morality and wisdom. To serve the community well, they not only need solid professional knowledge but also wide information through extensive reading. Therefore, it is very important for them to manage their spare time and organize their campus life in a more efficient way. Moreover, they have to learn to be more independent and rational.
In the meeting, Mr. Yu Zhibin, the teacher-in-charge also made a statement as representative of all teachers. He encouraged the students to set up correct values, seek good learning methods and to be brave to practise their English. This would help them to make their university life rich and colorful. Students Ge Wenyi from Grade 2014 and Chen Ziqi from Grade 2015 also made excellent speeches in the meeting on behalf of senior students and freshmen respectively.
According to the schedule, SFLS has arranged a series of orientation activities for the freshmen in the following days, including ideological education, group psychological counseling, get-to-know parties, face-to-face talk with excellent peers, rules and regulations learning and meet of exchange on summer social practice.
